The problem Message Threads solves
Long-running agents resend their entire conversation on every turn: every prior message, every tool result, every screenshot. As sessions grow to hundreds of thousands of tokens, requests get huge and the wait before Claude starts answering grows with them. Message Threads moves that state to Anthropic's servers between turns.
How it works
- The first (create) request sends the full conversation, system prompt and tools
- Later (continue) requests send only new messages plus the previous response's ID
- Enable it with the thread parameter plus the message-threads-2026-08-12 beta header
- The official SDKs provide a thread helper that handles the header, keeps the conversation in memory, and replays the full conversation on certain continuation errors
The effect, as Anthropic reports it, is a median time to first token about 35% lower on requests with 500,000 to 1 million tokens, based on its Claude Code rollout. In long Claude Code conversations, median request size fell from about 800 KB to about 1.8 KB. Those are Anthropic's figures from its own rollout, not independently verified results.
The beta limits that decide whether it fits
- Best-effort: a thread expires 5 minutes after its last request, and is deleted no more than 1 hour after last use — there is no API to list, read or delete threads
- Thread state is held in encrypted memory and never written to disk
- Not eligible for zero data retention or HIPAA configurations
- Incompatible with Message Batches, token counting and most context editing
- Apps must keep their own copy of the conversation — Anthropic tells developers to do exactly that
The 5-minute expiry is the key design constraint: threads suit active agent sessions that keep talking, not conversations that pause for hours. If your agent idles, the thread dies and you resend the full conversation to start a new one.
Where it is available
The beta is available on the native Claude Platform, Claude Platform on AWS, Claude in Microsoft Foundry, and Anthropic-managed Claude models on Google Cloud, on every model in beta. Long-running coding agents, computer-use agents whose screenshots stay with the thread, and document- and image-heavy workflows are the intended beneficiaries.
You are a coding agent in a long session. Keep a running summary of decisions made so far in your own memory, because server-side thread state expires after 5 idle minutes. Before each tool call, state the current goal and the last verified checkpoint.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Message Threads reduce my Claude API costs?
No. Claude still reads the full conversation every turn, so token usage, pricing and rate limits are unchanged. Threads cut request size and time to first token, not the bill.
How long does a thread live?
A thread expires 5 minutes after its last request, and is deleted no more than 1 hour after last use. Keep your own copy of the conversation, since there is no API to list, read or delete threads.
Do I need to change my code to use Message Threads?
For API apps, yes: add the thread parameter and the message-threads-2026-08-12 beta header, or use the official SDK thread helper. Claude Code users get it by default for most users.
Is Message Threads available on every Claude model?
Anthropic says the beta is available on every model, across the native Claude Platform, AWS, Microsoft Foundry and Google Cloud (Anthropic-managed models).
Can I use Message Threads with zero data retention or HIPAA workloads?
No. Threads are not eligible for zero data retention or HIPAA configurations, and thread state is held in encrypted server memory, never on disk.
