What OpenAI just announced
On October 7, 2026, OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 globally in the ChatGPT Chat tab, together with a new "Intelligent UI" — a richer answer experience where GPT-6 composes responses from text, visuals, and interactive elements. The company says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT weekly, so this is one of the largest AI updates of the year.
Who gets which model
OpenAI is splitting the rollout across two models, both described as "tuned for everyday conversation." Paid tiers — Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise — get GPT-6 Sol first. Free and Go tiers get GPT-6 Luna starting October 8, 2026. Enterprise access depends on your workplace admin's settings, so check with your admin if you don't see it yet.
| Tier | Model | Available from |
|---|---|---|
| Plus / Pro / Business / Enterprise | GPT-6 Sol | Oct 7, 2026 |
| Free / Go | GPT-6 Luna | Oct 8, 2026 |
What the Intelligent UI actually does
Instead of answering everything in plain text, GPT-6 now chooses the most useful format for your question. Ask for a recipe and you might see the cooking timeline displayed beside it. Ask about a road trip and your stops appear plotted on a map, with detour notes. Ask for a loan calculation and an in-chat savings calculator or bill splitter can appear — tappable, right inside the conversation.
Other examples from OpenAI's own announcement: small games you can play without leaving the chat, and interactive diagrams for learners where you change an input and watch the output respond. Plain text is still the default whenever it's genuinely the best answer — the UI is meant to appear only when it helps.
What's new under the hood
The update applies only to the Chat experience — the models powering Work and Codex are unchanged. On the safety side, OpenAI says GPT-6 builds on the GPT-6 Astra safety advances over GPT-5.6 Sol, with stronger resistance to multi-turn jailbreak attempts and better handling of its own limits. (These are vendor-reported claims, not independently verified.)
Speed improvements
In a companion announcement, OpenAI reported that GPT-6 Instant starts answering web-search questions about 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. Note the caveat: that measures time-to-first-response, not total completion time — your answer starts appearing faster, but the full reply isn't necessarily 44% quicker.
How to get the most out of Intelligent UI in your prompts
The Intelligent UI is triggered by GPT-6's own judgment, but you can steer it. Ask explicitly for the format you want: "show this as an interactive chart," "make me a tappable calculator for this," "plot these stops on a map." The more concrete your request, the more likely GPT-6 is to pick a visual or interactive element instead of plain text.
Plan a 5-day road trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles with 3 scenic stops per day. Plot the stops on a map with detour notes, and include an interactive budget calculator with sliders for gas, food, and hotels.
- Ask for the format you want: chart, map, calculator, timeline, interactive diagram.
- Give concrete data or constraints so the visual has something to work with.
- Request plain text when you don't need visuals — "just answer in text" still works.
- For learning topics, ask for interactive diagrams: "let me change the input and see what happens".
Quick recap
GPT-6 is rolling out to all ChatGPT tiers with two model flavors — Sol for paid users, Luna for Free and Go. The new Intelligent UI answers with charts, maps, calculators, and interactive elements when they help. Prompt for the format you want, and remember OpenAI's safety and speed claims are vendor-reported until independently tested.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which GPT-6 model do I get on the Free tier?
Free and Go tier users get GPT-6 Luna, starting from October 8, 2026. Both Sol and Luna are described by OpenAI as "tuned for everyday conversation," so the Free experience should feel close to paid for casual use.
Is the Intelligent UI a new app or a setting I have to turn on?
Neither. It's part of the ChatGPT Chat tab experience — GPT-6 itself decides when an answer deserves visuals, charts, buttons, or interactive elements. You can nudge it by explicitly asking for a chart, map, or calculator in your prompt.
Does the GPT-6 update affect Codex or the Work features?
No. OpenAI says the update applies only to the Chat experience. The models powering Work and Codex are unchanged.
Is the "44% sooner" speed claim real?
It comes from OpenAI's own community announcement and measures time-to-first-response on web-search questions — how fast the answer starts appearing, not how fast it finishes. Treat it as a vendor-reported figure until independently benchmarked.
Is GPT-6 safer than GPT-5.6?
According to OpenAI, GPT-6 builds on GPT-6 Astra's safety advances, with stronger resistance to multi-turn jailbreak attempts and better recognition of its own limits. These are OpenAI's claims; independent safety evaluations take time to appear.
